Recession Drives Demand for Hosted EPM
Location: Webcast
Date and Time: 9/2/2009 |

As businesses tighten their belts in response to the recession, they're turning to project and portfolio management software to help them identify which IT projects are mission critical and to help them execute those projects as efficiently as possible.

Increasingly, they're opting for Software as a Service (SaaS) versions of project management and portfolio management solutions because software as a service is cheaper and easier to deploy than traditional, on premise software, according to tech industry analysts and customers who've gone the SaaS route. (SaaS is also known as hosted or on demand offerings.)

A Project Portfolio Management (PPM) system is an essential tool for collecting project requests, building business cases, managing approvals and prioritizing your companys strategic initiatives. But PPM systems can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars and take months to implement. RCM Technologies has teamed up with Microsoft to develop a Software as a Service (SaaS) approach to PPM that drastically lowers the cost of ownership and gives management the information they need to effectively align project investments with corporate strategy.

No longer is the IT department merely a support function, detached from the business and the goals of the organization. Rather, IT has grown into a true partner. A culture of collaboration is critical now and to thrive in the future. Achieving this requires the alignment of IT portfolios around business objectives from the start and throughout the process to demand and deliver value.
Presenting IIRs 9th Annual ITPM Event created to focus on the importance of IT as a strategic business partner. We all know it is crucial to establish effective project prioritization, resource allocation, and development processes. Now, more than ever, with tightened resources, this grows ever more difficult to deliver. The ITPM Event provides the IT toolbox necessary to demonstrate and maximize the business value of each IT investment. Why is the IT Portfolio Management Event different than other IT events? Its the only unbiased, cross-industry perspective. We have crafted a unique and interactive program that addresses your key frustrations through roundtable discussion groups, in depth workshops, and real-life stories from corporate practitioners in the trenches. Plus, hear fresh c-level perspectives from award winning CIOs including Michael Israel, SVP, CIO, Six Flags Theme Parks, and Andres Carvallo, CIO, Austin Energy. Whether you are looking to formalize IT governance, incorporate an agile framework, conduct risk assessments, channel IT spending, or improve resource allocation, youll find answers. The age of IT as simply a service provider is overa complete fusion of IT and business is on the horizon. Will you be ready? Be ready. Join us in November.

Microsoft Project Server 2007 Webcast
Location: webcast
Date and Time: 8/31/2006 | 10:00am - 11:00am (ET)

Project Solutions Group would like to help answer the question:
Why Should My Organization Upgrade to Microsoft Project Server 2007?

In this webcast, we will discuss all the reasons one should upgrade as well as give you an in-depth demonstration on the new tool.

Some of the topics will include:

Ease of Use & Productivity
Microsoft Project Server 2007 is the first major release of Microsoft Project Server in several years.  Project Solutions Group was chosen as a Beta partner for P2007 and we are happy to announce that there are significant improvements in the applications features and performance.

The newest version of Project Server interface is extremely user friendly and intuitive.  Layouts are easier to read and functions are easy to find and execute.  Users will find that in the 2007 version, Project Server’s functionality allows them be more productive while using more advanced capabilities within the application.

Some of the new features:
    ·   Multi-level undo
    ·   Change highlighting as task fields are updated
    ·   10 times better performance (especially over networks)
    ·   Basic workflow and core proposal to project creation capabilities
    ·   Timesheet improvements:
        o   functioning independent projects
        o   better admin time reporting
o  deleted tasks can now be permanently removed
        o  better audit logging
o  update preview on server before changes are finalized

Business Intelligence and Reporting
Project Server 2007 allows for more custom configuration allowing your business to better meet their reporting and business intelligence needs.  Reports are more detailed and are easier to develop; providing more detailed data to help you manage your business.  In addition, because 2007 has improved programmability on the back-end, it allows for better integration with other line of business systems.

Some of the new features:
    ·   New reporting database
    ·  Analysis report access directly from the user’s desktop client
    ·  Real-time continuous data publishing
    ·  Unlimited customizable fields and outline codes, with all data type features
       for all fields, including multi-value
    ·  KPIs (available with SQL 2005 update)

Operational Cost Savings
With all of improvements inherent in Project Server 2007, your company can see a generous cost savings in their day to day business.  How?

Performance improvements of approximately 10x can reduce the need for Citrix or Remote Desktop connections for WAN-based deployments
Server-based calculations also reduce traffic, bandwidth, and network costs between the server and desktop users and it improves performance for the end-user..  Additionally, overall administration and maintenance costs are greatly reduced.

Scalability to any size enterprise is integrated and consistent with the largest SharePoint server farms, reducing management costs and allowing for better centralized management and efficient use of infrastructures.
Improved error messages and reporting for debugging and maintenance help reduce technical maintenance costs and increase the effectiveness of the support team.

Administrative functions are more clearly organized, grouped, and more powerful, improving the productivity and responsiveness of application administrators and reducing training and maintenance costs.

So the real question isn’t “Why Upgrade to Microsoft Project Server 2007?”, but “Why NOT Upgrade?”

Avoiding the Risks of Risk Management Webcast
Location:
Date and Time: 6/30/2006 | 2:00pm - 3:00pm

For years, Project Managers have been taught to identify, quantify and develop strategies for dealing with risks, yet risk management continues to be one of the weakest areas of project management.

Risk lists kept in excel spreadsheets with no direct correlation to the project plan become dusty artifacts created during planning and referenced only after the risks have occurred. Contingency reserve added to budgets and schedules appear as 'padding' and become easy targets for management looking to reduce project costs and durations. What is a project manager to do to effectively manage risks in today's environment?

This session will define a process for extending the PMBOK Risk Management framework and integrating risk management into the project plan to provide real, proactive and ongoing management and tracking of risks. Techniques for developing schedule contingency using the critical path method will be introduced. The session will address ways to present your risk plan to management and customers as well as ways to get your team involved in the risk management process.

The session will also demonstrate how to practically apply these techniques the most current project management applications like Microsoft Project Server 2003.

PPM
is a set of business practices and technology that allow organizations to manage projects as a strategic portfolio; ensuring your project investments are aligned with the strategic goals of your organization. The hammering project management takes for "bad estimates" and project failure often begins in the executive suite with unrealistic targets, deadlines, and budgets. PPM aligns what an organization wants to do with the resources—the money, hours, people, time, and equipment required to get it done.

In this seminar we will discuss how your organization can take advantage of one or more of the following benefits:

      Determining appropriate project selection criteria
Connecting your business strategy to the project selection criteria

Preventing "problem projects" from making it into the pipeline

Identifying & terminating non-strategic projects

Using technology to optimize your portfolio and gain real-time visibility

Determining RIO on current and future projects

Properly staging projects for the highest ROI

This seminar will be offered at no cost to the first twenty registries.

“Does EPM do EVM?”

Delivering Earned Value Management with the Microsoft Office Project Management Solution

On May 10, 2006, The Boston Chapter of MPA (Official Industry Association for Microsoft Project) will be holding a spring membership meeting.  MPA has teamed with Project Solutions Group, Inc. for an evening of insight into how MS Project can be leveraged to support Earned Value Management as well as Microsoft’s solution to Earned Value Management (EVM).

The core objective of project management is to facilitate the completion of projects within cost, schedule and scope constraints.  This objective translates universally to all projects regardless of contract type, size or complexity.  Poor planning, scope creep, ineffective risk management and the lack of visibility into project status and overall health contribute greatly to these project failure statistics.  With ongoing and increasing pressure to justify spending and avoid costly project overruns, many organizations are adopting Earned Value Management as a project management technique.

This interactive session will focus on outlining some best-practices and tools and techniques that organizations can leverage to better manage project schedules, costs and resources as well as provide attendees with practical guidance and actionable steps for deploying solutions that will support better management of project schedules, resources and EVM compliance.

The presentation will be given at the Microsoft District Office at 201 Jones Rd. (6th floor, Room MPR-A); Waltham, MA 02451. Cost for the event is free for members and $15 for non-members. Pizza and soft drinks will be served. Directions may be found at http://www.microsoft.com/mscorp/info/usaoffices/newengland/waltham.mspx
